Annual Heartland Triathlon served as an exciting
family gathering for Father’s Day weekend.
Athletes and families from throughout Florida
and southern Georgia converged to experience
some true southern hospitality via the largest
health and fitness event in Highlands County.
The USAT Florida Regional Youth Triathlon
Championships were held Saturday morning with
children ages 5 thru 15 racing their respective
age groups. Overcast skies made for ideal
weather and a fantastic morning of racing for
our youth participants. It was exciting to
watch as our youth athletes also vied for the
youth team recognition.
The highlight of Saturday evening was packet
pick-up. “Highlight” is not an understatement
as athletes were treated to ‘unbelievable’
goodie bags including a sealed red box gift with
instructions to not open until December 25th.
Legacy Bicycles and FitNiche offered our guests
some tremendous pre-race deals in preparation
for race day.
Sunday morning started off atypically overcast
and foggy to the point where our Olympic
distance athletes could not see the turn buoys
from shore. About 5 minutes prior to the start,
the skies cleared over spring-fed Lake Jackson
and our athletes were treated to a great morning
Post race awards had a coffee theme to them as
Brewster’s Coffee House provided every age group
winner (5-deep) with a pound of freshly roasted
coffee, custom travel mugs, and leather embossed
coasters. In addition, athletes received some
nostalgia as the 25th anniversary of
the Iron War between world Ironman champions
Dave Scott and Mark Allen was celebrated. Each
age group winner received a custom designed
print signed by both world champions.
The Heartland Triathlon team remains grateful
and appreciative of everyone choosing to visit
Highlands County for our event. We consider it
a privilege to be a part of the wonderful sport
of triathlon and very much look forward to
